This beautiful blue asparagus plate was made using the barbotine technique. It's adorned with vivid asparagus and a wicker texture on the rim. Did you know that majolica ceramics, like this plate, became popular in France after English companies gained fame? French companies started making their own version called Barbotine. And The asparagus motif was most popular. Asparagus were very popular during the rise of Barbotine production. Because of the industrial revolution, fine dinner ware became more accessible to the middle classas and asparagus-themed ceramics, like this plate, became sought after.

 

The palate measures 8-3/4". It is in excellent condition and dates to circa 1890.
